The United Methodist Church is
involved in hundreds of missions programs around the world. The Advance for
Christ and His Church (often just referred to as "The Advance"), is an official
program of The General Board
of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, for "voluntary,
designated second-mile financial giving where 100% of your gift goes to the
ministry of your choice." For more information click on through to
The Advance for Christ and His
Church.
If you have a particular missions interest, try
The Advance Search
Page which can help you to identify specific Advance projects that you
might wish to support.

| The Missions Committee: |
Chair - Kathy
Mulholland |
|
The missions committee
responsibilities include overseeing the designations for our monthly communion
offerings, deciding what missions projects our congregation should support and
informing the congregation about the projects, keeping the congregation aware
of special projects of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), and
keeping our pledges of designated amounts to support
Open Door,
Amistad, and
Habitat for Humanity.
In
the recent past we have helped with peace vigils, hung 1000+ paper cranes in
Fellowship Hall to honor the victims of 9/11, 2001, collected both
back-to-school supplies and also Christmas gifts for Amistad children
(including a Spanish New Testament for each one), established a prayer board in
the back of the sanctuary, supported missionaries in Japan, and highlighted
Advance Specials of UMCOR.
Some of the missions trips that our church
has gone on in the past include the following:
- June 1995, to Hull, Illinois, to help rebuild a flood
ravaged church.
- July 1996, to Hyndman, Pennsylvania, to help in flood
recovery efforts.
- January 2000, to Honduras, to help in rebuilding efforts
after Hurricane Mitch.
- July 2006, to Metarie, Louisiana, to help in the ongoing
recovery from Hurricane Katrina
- July 2008, to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to work with the
Greene County PA Habitat for Humanity chapter.
If anyone would like to join the Missions Committee,
please see Kathy Mulholland or Pastor Evangelista. We're always welcome to
expanding the committee and expanding our outreach! |
